Get Ready for Spring: Safeguard Your Home with These Tips

Get Ready for Spring: Safeguard Your Home with These Tips

For every perfect 70-degree Spring day, stormy, windy, and chilly days pop up throughout the next few months. Your home will have to brave them all, but fear not! There are many easy ways to protect your beautiful home this season while you're doing your Spring cleaning. It’s time to channel your inner planning and DIY skills!

Check Your Insurance Policies!

Before diving into any projects (we’ll get to that), check to see what your home insurance policy covers. If you’re a brand-new homeowner and recently bought insurance, there shouldn’t be any surprises. Ensure your new home is covered for losses resulting from natural disasters— flood, earthquake, or tornado policies may be sold separately.

Trim Your Trees.

Insurance commercials might seem dramatic, but the wind can cause more damage than just blowing off a few shingles! Large tree limbs can break off during strong gusts, damaging your home, car, and even your neighbor's property. Don't wait for a storm to discover issues with your trees– regular trimming (ideally by a professional) can help safeguard your precious property.

Don’t be caught off guard – Get a Sump Pump.

Do you have a sump pump? If not, now’s the perfect time to set one up and get it working! Basement flooding can cause significant damage quickly, so it’s wise to take preventive steps to avoid it. For extra precaution, having a backup sump pump is never a bad idea.

Clean Your Gutters!

It’s best to clean gutters routinely, but you’ll certainly want to clean your gutters when you realize how much damage water can do. These vital parts of your home keep water away from your home and its foundation. Protect them by clearing our debris and leaves and investing in preventative equipment. While your body needs water to stay healthy, your home doesn’t!

Have a Plan and Communicate It Often

Have a plan to protect yourself and your family! Especially in Pennsylvania, it’s difficult to predict what can happen. Ensure everybody in your house knows where to go during a severe thunderstorm, tornado, or (in some cases) an earthquake. Find the safest place in your home, away from windows and glass, and gather some snacks and an emergency kit in case the electricity goes out.

There are many ways you can protect your home from inclement weather. Don’t consider any of these a one-and-done type of action, either. Regularly inspect your home for water damage, leaks in doors and windows, and problem trees. And remember: Your beautiful home is replaceable, but the people who live in it are not! Keep your house safe— and your precious family even safer.
